Teresa de Lauretis |
Teresa de Lauretis was born and educated in Italy, where she received her doctorate in Modern Languages and Literatures from Bocconi University in Milan. She came to the United States shortly after completing her degree and taught Italian, comparative literatures, women's studies, and film studies at several American universities, including the University of Colorado and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She is currently Professor of the history of Consciousness, an interdisciplinary doctoral program at the university of California, Santa Cruz, and has been a Visiting Professor at several universities in the United States as well as Canada, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands. The author of numerous essays and books on literature, film, semiotics, and feminist theory, deLauretis writes in both English and Italian. Her first book (1976) was on the Jewish-Italian novelist Italo Svevo, and early reader of Freud, and her most recent book, The Practice of Love (1994), is a reconsideration of Freud's theory of sexuality in light of lesbian literary and visual texts, from fiction to poetry to film.
